Canning Hunger to begin again October 19-31. In September 2007, we became affiliated with Canning Hunger (http://www.canninghunger.org), a grassroots, non-profit organization dedicated to feeding the hungry and to ending hunger in America. A nationwide organization founded in 1992, Canning
Hunger has mobilized over 200,000 volunteers and provided more than
50,000,000 meals to children, families, and individuals who would
otherwise have gone hungry.
Through Canning Hunger’s Neighborhood Connections program, Storrs Community Church
volunteers conduct neighborhood food drives several times a year,
inviting neighbors to contribute non-perishable foods for
donation to the local food bank nearest their town, either the Covenant
Soup Kitchen in Willimantic or the Tri-Town Pantry in Rockville.
The Neighborhood Connections program is an approach in which everybody benefits: the hungry are fed, people are given a convenient way to help, and neighbors become more acquainted with each other. A
feeling of connection and community develops over time, as neighbors
join together in a common expression of values and caring.
